"You will have significant experiences. I hope that you will write them down and keep a record of them, that you will read them from time to time and refresh your memory of those meaningful and significant things. Some may be funny. Some may be significant only to you. Some of them may be sacred and quietly beautiful. Some may build one upon another until they represent a lifetime of special experience." Gordon B. Hearing Problems

Audiologist: A physician specializing in identifying, diagnosing, treating and monitoring disorders of the ear.

My poor children. I suppose it's time to make an appointment with the audiologist. Their hearing is getting progressively worse. It must run in their genes, because all three of them have it.

The poor dears. They can't even hear me when I tell them to get their shoes on, or get dressed, or brush their teeth, or pick up their toys. It's so sad. They just stare straight ahead. No response.

This one is probably going to be a difficult case to diagnose. Their hearing seems to fluctuate. Sometimes their hearing appears to be just fine. They have no problems hearing the television, or their video games, or even their friends. And I swear, if I even unwrap a piece of candy they can hear it from the other side of the house and come running. You see, sometimes their hearing seems to be just fine.

Yes, theirs is an interesting case indeed. I feel just awful for them. I'm sure their problem is really a terrible one. Because I just know they would never purposely ignore their sweet mother's requests.

**Sigh.**

I hope we're able to find a cure soon.

Let me know what the diagnosis is. My children have the same condition. I've been going to a specialist lately that tells me it might stem from a lack of "follow through" on my part. NO...NOT ME! OK, I guess the Love and Logic expert might have a point. I have a prescription for this condition if you are interested.

That is a concern. My oldest son has hearing loss on and off like that. Sometimes it is fine and other times not. He has been to several audiologists and his is fluid in his ear that makes it so he can't hear (and they can tell if there is fluid in there, behind the ear drum). It seems like it would be worse during allergies, that I didn't know he had. I hope you can find out what is going on, it is very concerning when your dealing with ears.

Hmmmm...it seems that my children have the same symptoms. Let me know what the "cure" is. I think Kara's love and logic class might help!

Wow it must be contagious. We seem to have the same symptoms going on here. Please keep me informed. Bradley actually has to see the audiologist soon. Hope we can find out if he does have a hearing problem, hearing his own voice.

I think it must run among children. I know that I never suffered from it when I was a child. I think that the person that I have talked to also said that my problem is the follow thru, but then again I do the exact same thing that person does (my husband) and they follow him but not me. Why is that?

We have the exact same problem here. And my 11 year old doesn't think it's his hearing that's the problem, but rather that his mom actually just loves to yell.

Ah... selective hearing! My children have a bad case of it too!

I think our kids must've played together when we weren't looking because they've shared their disease...or maybe my kids shared it with yours.
Good luck, hon. I'm with ya all the way!!!

Quick Wendi ...call the CDC!!!! It must be an epidemic! We have it too and we are in NC! Hurry and save the others...there is still time! (LOL)

My kids have THE EXACT SAME THING. Tell me what the doctor says about fixing it. I'd like it to go away NOW.

Not me, right Mom?

Yes. Tell them they will have to get a big shot when they get their hearing checked. Bet they'll hear that one!

TOO funny!!!! :o)

You had me going for awhile!

You know what is really bad? It is so contagious that sometimes the Mom gets it too. I think I'm coming down with the same symptom. "Mom? Mom? Mom? MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!"

HYSTERICAL!!!!

Guess what, doesn't get any better when they are teenagers! In fact, they just start talking louder so they can hear over loud music, each other, etc...

You are great!!!

(If I had known about the teen thing, I would have sought treatment earlier...)

if you find a cure, send it my way!

I've got the answer! Just unwrap candy and tell them to put their shoes on...simultaneously!

Okay, no more posts that sound real, but aren't :) I really did believe you!

If you find the cure, I'll pay you for it. Granted it will only be like five bucks, but I need that cure! If I have to say "Get dressed" only a dozen times in the morning, we're doing great!!

Wendi- Your kids will just have to come and visit us so Jeff can test their hearing and give you the real scoop. I think he sees a lot of cases like this! : ) We miss you guys!

Crazymamaof6 said...

we've reached that at near epidemic proportions.

i hear if you talk even quieter to them they listen better. but i can't seem to grasp that concept.

good luck! Crystal is a genius.
i generally call that bribery but I'm not above that either

You are so silly. You had me going. I was surprised you were seriously going to take them to the dr. for selective hearing. When my kids don't respond I say "look at my eyes while I'm talking to you". That kinda helps.

holy cow!! i'm so glad i came to your blog to get a diagnosis for my kids! i can't believe this is so wide spread. i'm off to make an appointment now...

So funny!Maybe I should call in the audiologist here too. My kids power lies in not hearing/ ignoring me on select occasions.

I "hear" ya, girl! My wonderful boys have the same affliction. So sad.

Desiree said...

Ha ha! My sisters think I never outgrew that condition. Unless they say my name when they talk to me I don't seem to hear them!

Well keep us in touch, I hope that everything turns out okay

I'm just sitting here giggling right now that so many people have chosen to comment on this. Funny Sister!

I think your kids hearing problem is that they can't hear the 'mom frequency' wow, good thing it's not the 'friends/tv/video games/candy frequency'!

Karri said...

Hah, hah. Too funny. Let me know if you find a cure

Nat Nat said...

My kids are comming down with this same problem. Let us know when you find the cure. Perhaps my repeating the request louder and louder until all the neighbors can hear me, isn't working. Hum.. what ia a mom to do?

p.s Why is that the neighbors can hear all and yet the kids nothing?

raising4boys said...

I've heard this is a very contagious condition and can last for many years (my hubby still suffers for it)

Good LUCK!!!

(very cute post)

You are seriously HILARIOUS!!
And if you figure out what ails them...let me know. It seems that my little dears are experiencing the same symptoms!

Carrie and Troy Keiser said...

HEHEHAHAHE I believe that my children are likewise afflicted! :) When you discover the cure, you'll share, yes?!

In this case, I would apply consistent behavior modification techniques...

Assuming that "all children function more effectively under the right set of consequences. Reinforcers are consequences that strengthen behavior. Punishments are consequences that weaken behavior. Students' behaviors are managed and changed by the consequences of classroom behavior. To manage behavior through consequences, use this multi-step process:

1. The problem must be defined, usually by count or description.
2. Design a way to change the behavior.
3. Identify an effective reinforcer.
4. Apply the reinforcer consistently to shape or change behavior.

Consequences of behavior are directly related to the events that either come immediately before or after them."
